The metropolitan hustle and bustle have not been enough to make all Makassar residents dissolve in the will of the times. Among the dominance of concrete buildings, some residents are still loyal to traditional houses on stilts.

Marjuni Amiruddin, 53, was relaxing under his stilted house located in an alley on Jl. Yos Sudarso, Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Monday (21/3/2022) afternoon. A neighbor also sat there while chatting with Marjuni's wife. Enjoying the wind was the reason why the neighbors felt comfortable spending the afternoon at Marjuni's stilt house.

The stilt house is more than 20 years old and was built using ulin wood, which in South Sulawesi is known as sappu wood. The house measuring 10 meters by 20 m is firmly supported by 12 alliri or supporting poles about 2 m high.

“Friends and family, especially those from out of town, love visiting here. They enjoy sitting under or on the terrace above. Neighbors often spend time under the house in the afternoon or evening,” said Marjuni.

Among the rows of modern houses in the alley, Marjuni's stilt house stands out. The wood is black and the home looks cool under the shade with various plants in its small yard.

Marjuni said that in the beginning, they lived in an ordinary house. When they were about to renovate the house, Marjuni's parents chose to replace it with a house on stilts. The reason was to continue the tradition of houses on stilts in the villages where the childhood home of Marjuni's mother was. There was a longing to enjoy a house on stilts after his mother left her hometown in Soppeng regency, about 160 kilometers northeast of Makassar.

Marjuni and his siblings also understood the wishes of their parents. Therefore, their house was demolished and transformed into a wooden house. This house was ordered in Barru regency, about 100 km north of Makassar. Marjuni and his mother chose the model of the house, as well as the wood to be used.

A mother and her child walk into a house on stilts on Jalan Yos Sudarso, Makassar, Monday (21/3/2022). Previously at this location stood a permanent house, but later the owner replaced it with a house on stilts.

In Barru, the house was made by expert craftsmen. When finished, parts of the house were brought to Makassar and installed in its current location. They chose the model of a traditional house or a house on stilts in the Soppeng area, following their mother's hometown. Since its establishment more than 20 years ago, almost nothing has changed in this house. Marjuni was reluctant to replace it. He even enjoyed this house with all his memories.

On Jl. Sultan Alauddin, a crowded and busy lane on the Makassar-Gowa connecting axis, two houses on stilts also stand firmly. Located in a location with fairly spacious land and several large trees in the front yard, this house always steal the attention of people passing by.

One of the houses on stilts has shorter poles, about 1 m, with a roof resembling a traditional house in Central Java. There are many Jepara carvings on the outer or inner walls of the house. However, the shape of the stairs and terraces are still typical of Bugis-Makassar houses.

This house has been inhabited for at least three generations, from the first generation named Andi Time Karaeng Ballajawaya. The naming of Ballajawaya — which means Javanese house — behind Andi Time's name could be because the model of this house adopts some forms of the Javanese house.

Unlike places like Thailand and Cambodia there’s not much in the way of traditional hostel setups in Indo, there are however a HEAP of guest houses and budget hotels to choose from. Your best bet on this front is a good old fashioned Trip Advisor search or personal recommendation. The following are based on where I’ve personally stayed in, the averages are what I’ve looked around for.

Cheapest Bed – Bali Reef Divers, Tulamben – £2.50 per person per night (4 share dorm)
Average Bed – Ayu Beach Inn, Kuta – £7.50 per person per night (double room)
Most Expensive Bed – Grand Sunti Hotel, Ubud – £30 per night (double room)
Average nights accommodation (double/twin room) £5-7

Food and Drink

When it comes to food and drink Indo is haps cheap and there’s such a variety to be found – whether you want traditional Indonesian dishes, other Asian dishes or simply want homely western food you’re totally covered and it won’t break your wallet either…
Favourite local dish – Gado Gado (tofu, potato and veggies in a peanut sauce)
Cheapest meal – Indonesian buffet at Warung Indonesia (in Kuta, Bali) – £1
Average Indonesia meal – around £1
Average western meal – around £2
Meal in a more established restaurant/chain (inc drink) – around £3-5
Most guesthouses also have a free breakfast too which is always a budget saver!
Average cost of beer (large Bintang, Circle K) – £1.50
Average cost of beer (large Bintang , restaurant) – £1.75
Favourite place to eat – Warung Indonesia, an absolutely amazing Indonesian Buffett place in between Poppies 1 and 2 in Kuta, Bali and you can have a solid feed and a drink for under £1.50!
Other Top Tip – you can party pretty damn cheap in Kuta (literally spending less than £5!) in places like the Skygarden BBQ (which includes an hour of free beer and 3 hours of unlimited buffet for £2.50!) .
Estimated food cost per month (40 Indonesian dishes and 20 western dishes) – £80

Transport

I’ll be honest here, when I’m in Indonesia I tend to base myself in Bali and surf, taking the odd day trip here and there – so my experiences are limited to minibuses and shared taxis, except for a few trips further afield!
Airport – Kuta – £5
Kuta – Uluwatu/Padang/Uluwatu Temple – £5 (return)
Kuta- Ubud (inc Monkey Forest) – £ (day trip return)
Kuta – Ubud – £4 (one way, shared shuttle)
Ubud – Tulamben – £22.50 (private car)
Tulamben – Kuta – £25 (private car)
Kuta – Gili T – £25 return (mini bus & ferry combo)
Bali – Komodo (flight) – approx £35 (one way)
Also keep in mind that the airport departure tax is now 200,000IDR (roughly £10)
Depending on what you want to do in Bali the travel costs are going to be what set you back a good chuck of your budget. You can rent a moped pretty cheap here for shorter days trips for around £5 per day.
Over a month though an average kind of trip would be Airport – Kuta – Ubud – Gili T – Kuta – Uluwatu Temple – Kuta and a flight back from Komodo (if you’re doing a trip there)
Which would be an estimated transport cost of £89 including the airport departure tax.

Hello again everybody! In this beautiful morning we want to talk more about the wonderful places in Indonesia. Before, we’ve talked about the best place for fishers out there included in best fishing spots in Indonesia, but now the thing is a little bit different. We want to tell you about the special places for the backpackers in Indonesia. Indonesia has many choices of good places, for a cheap price. That’s why many foreigners start to do their backpacker things in most places in Indonesia.

1.
Rammang-Rammang Village
I knew this place from the social media outlet, Instagram. A friend had posted pre-wedding pictures of herself riding on a small boat. I went expecting the same experience, but ended up finding so much more.
Rammang Rammang is located in Maros, just an hour or so drive from the city of Makassar.
The place is a little bit hidden behind the main road and there are no signs point the way. It can still be found easily, however.
Just ask the driver to take you to the main gate at the entrance of the Bosowa cement factory in Maros. Not far from the gate there is a view of a small road surrounded by paddy fields. Once you find weird looking giant stones in the middle of the paddy field, you’ll know you're in the right place.
The stones are part of a range of karsts. From the small road, you will see many stones scattered through the paddy fields. Locals have named it “stone park.”
On the other side sits a particularly large karst. That is where you will find the entrance to Rammang Rammang.
Ask a local where to find Rammang Rammang village and you will be led to a dock with many small boat-like canoes called katinting.
You can rent a katinting for Rp 200.000 (US$17), which can carry up to five people at a time. There is no other way to reach the village.
Boarding one of these boats, we soon found ourselves on a river lined with mangrove trees. The river afforded a remarkable view of karsts with gaping caves, towering cliffs and local people riding by on boats going about their daily routines.

After 30 minutes on the river, we arrived at the remote Barua village, finding it wrapped in lovely paddy fields and more karsts.
The village wasn’t much more than a few wooden houses and some cows, but it was incredibly peaceful.
We asked a local to guide us around the village and he showed us prehistoric caves where we found ancient palm marks on the wall.
The caves were a bit different because the stone was not uniformly black. After walking under the sun, however, the shade came as a welcome relief. Deeper exploration of inner caves is a possibility, but we were happy to just relax.
Next, our guide took us on a hike up a karst where a dam had been built. There we enjoyed a cup of coffee and another stunning view.
On our way back down to the dock, we managed to make another stop at Telaga Bidadari, a small, clear-water pool. Though we didn’t spend much time here, it was a nice delay before returning to the world of electricity.
When I said that this place surpassed my expectations, I meant it. It turns out that Rammang Rammang is the second largest karst area in the world, after the one in Yunnan, China.
The Rammang Rammang karsts straddle Maros and Pangkep regencies and occupy a total area of around 45,000 hectares. In 2001, they became a UNESCO world heritage site.
2.Bali Island
Usually we divide the explanations into the general and then sub information like the opening hours and also the cost for entry ticket. But, because some of the places are cities and regencies, the informations provided before is a little bit irrelevant. We want to change it into two sub informations like usual, but different. Now the sub informations are the best time to travel, and also the estimated cost in that place in one day. So the informations might help some backpackers with budgeting and stuff. We go to the first place included in the best places in Indonesia for backpackers.
Of course, the first one that came into the backpackers minds is the Island of Bali. Like in things to do near Bali airport you can see that the island has a long list of  interesting things to do in here. Beside the clubbing activities which considered pretty expensive in here the backpackers can choose the different and much enjoyable activities like trying the fun at the Kuta Beach and many other places. You can easily find them if you search it on google or just by looking at the direction boards.
The foods in here like the satay or the food they called as Nasi Campur Bali are considered very affordable for the backpackers. With a little amount of money, you can enjoy the meal with relief and happy feels in your heart.

Be it that you have decided to go to Indonesia by backpackingfor its culture or cultural events, or for its nature and sports, you have made a decision that is by far one of the best. This south-east Asian archipelago is a massive one. Indonesia has 18,110 islands and only one-third of them are inhabited. Besides its capital city Jakarta, Bali is a wonderfully rich destination for backpackers.

Backpacking for the Adventurous

Traveling in Indonesia can even mean luxurious (at a budget) yet rewarding. The fact that tourism being the lifeblood of Indonesia with the threats caused by the Bali bombing events, it has created a competitive industry for the long stay, home stays, hotels and even bed-and-breakfasts. Heavily discounted prices are all that kind of deals that you will be offered.

Natural Activities

Backpackers are adventurous people by nature. Rafting, bungy jumping, trekking, surfing, diving, snorkeling, golfing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding are just some of the activities you can do in Indonesia. There are many different types of transportations for backpackers as well. Such as airlines, ground transportations and cruises. Trekking is best through the jungles of Borneo. It is the third largest island in the world located north of Java Island, Indonesia.

Limitless Nature

The nature is limitless. Backpackers can enjoy the beaches, waves, lakes, mountains, forest, flora & fauna, and parks. If you are a backpacker, preparation makes a great difference to how fun your adventure in Indonesia can be. This I mean knowing the Indonesian culture, from their local people’s customs, their dances, music, performance arts, paintings, batik and sarongs, temples & festivities and national holidays.

Packing List for Backpacking in Indonesia

What about the packing list? Well, you must take these 16 items with you, at least. The first would be a sleep sheet (which is a very thin sleeping bag to protect you and keep you warm, clean, bug free and happy). If possible get a silk one with double the size as it is light, warm enough and big enough.

Don’t Forget

A travel journal or small notebook, toilet paper, extra passport photos, photocopies of passport, duct tape, sunscreen, marker pen, clothes line for laundry, safety pins, sink stopper to do your laundry, camping mirror, fishing line, sewing kit, small padlock with two keys and a compass.
Finally this post ends with one advice for the type of clothing to bring. Cotton material are best  for backpacking in Indonesia as it draws heat away from your skin to keep you cool. The humidity is much higher, hence do bring a thin cargo pants if you know you will be trekking in the jungle, protecting yourself from insect bites, leeches, ticks or possibly snake bites.
